What does ICEX GROUP do?

ICEX GROUP provides ITAD and STARR services. This means we process redundant IT equipment in order for it to avoid landfill and become useful again.

This is good for the planet: e-waste avoiding landfill, less need for extracting new resources and less carbon-intensive manufacturing etc.

This is good for people: when an otherwise redundant device can be put to use by others, this can help bridge the digital divide by making these devices more affordable or able to be donated.

Please check out our charity of the year and partner - Community TechAid, who work directly towards closing the digital divide by offering resources and training for those who need it most. We mention them a lot because we love the work they do! They especially appreciate donated laptops (and especially, especially if they can handle Windows 11)!

What can we do and what do we want to do ideally?

ICEX GROUP’s primary focus is on data-holding electronics - we love to process full IT suites, laptops, server rooms etc (we can do full decom and recom). We prioritise security and wherever possible we suggest erasure over shredding - check out our post as to why, here: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7315660220876156928

That being said, we will process all waste electronics for the sake of the planet. This means phones and tablets to even office microwaves etc.

In order to make the business viable, we would ask that these extra types of equipment are lumped in with what we are best suited to process; we are best suited to processing laptops, desktops and servers and can handle these most efficiently. This means there’s a far greater likelihood for your organisation to receive rebates to boost your IT budget or to choose to donate devices/profits from the sales to a charity - for example, Community TechAid!

Why do we do it? - put very simply: for the planet. Our CEO, John Russell, “hates waste” and saw how quickly the problem of e-waste was growing in the early 2000s. The need for better legislation, collaboration and general awareness is essential for sustainability efforts.

E-waste is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world.

E-waste leaks disproportionately harmful chemical such as lead or cadmium.

E-waste is a lost opportunity of valuable resources such as gold, copper, platinum etc and people who live near landfills have even taken to ‘mining’ in landfills for these precious materials - this carries great risk to the people ‘mining’ (who should be helped in other ways and provided with other opportunities.).
