Today is Earth Day (22nd April)! This year's theme is “Our Power, Our Planet”.

The idea is to promote sustainable practices with this year’s focus being on renewable and sustainable energy alternatives for cars, homes and businesses.

Have you heard of Earth Overshoot Day? - This year it is due to land on Aug 1st - “Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.”

The UK’s country Overshoot Day is May 20th - “A country’s overshoot day marks the date when Earth Overshoot Day would fall if all of humanity consumed at the same level as the people in that country.”

This shows we have a lot to do to get back into balance with nature - one of the ways we can achieve this and still thrive and enjoy modern luxuries is to embrace the principles of the circular economy - there are many principles but the primary three are:

Reduce/Prevent - manufacturer and consumer choices preventing waste from being created in the first place.

Reuse/Repurpose/Relocate - reviving and refurbishing old redundant resources to get them back into use, or putting something to a different use, or moving a redundant resource from one location to another to be put to use somewhere else without going to waste.

Recycle - the last resort ideally - avoiding landfilling and regaining valuable materials for remanufacturing and reducing the requirement for extracting virgin resources.
